Appendices Revision

It’s been a while, but I’ve been quietly revising the Heroic Tales Appendices Collection. In addition to a few new items and monsters, I am also including new mechanics such as assisting and critical success/fail charts. The monster stat blocks are also being re-tooled to be more in line with the current rules. Once it is ready I will update the file, which I would think should not be more than another week or two out.

I’ve been toying with the idea of also writing out some sort of “Librum Magicum” (spell list), but I’m not sure if there’s any interest in such a thing. Do most people prefer to just stick with free-form magic? Let me know, if you can, and if there’s enough interest I will start putting something together.

A spell list to choose from would be great, it can be used as a guide for players and facilitators on what spells a character can learn.

I do not know if it would be a great idea but I think classes should have a bit more of a spotlight. Classes helps players define their characters' role in the party. Each class might have 2 or 3 skills (exclusive to this class) that they can choose 1 from.

Class Skills work a bit differently as they might require a set amount of gold to be spent at a specific location for it to improve.

Something like this:

Knight

Choose one;

Guarded - +1 to maximum armor point, have 1 armor point when not wearing armor (+1 per skill improvement)

Cover - once per battle, choose to take the damage to be dealt to an ally (+1 more use per ability improvement)

Character can improve or change skills at forts or bastions. Changing skills will reset all improvements.

Improvement Cost: 100g × (next ability level + 1)

This might lock player characters to a certain playstyle but their presence in the party would be clear.

But just because a class system exist shouldn't restrict player choices.

That sounds like an interesting idea, and once I’m satisfied with the spells and have them posted I’ll give it some thought.

I will say that one of my favorite things about Heroic Tales is its classless nature, so I would keep the classes as mostly flavor with maybe a small perk. I much prefer that a player defines their character through style of play and chosen skills than a single selection at character creation.

But I will certainly see what I can do.
